Tooth Extraction

Removing a Majorly Compromised Tooth

Tooth extraction is often the last option we want to recommend to our patients, however sometimes it may be necessary. It is typically recommended when a tooth has become so compromised that restoring it is no longer an option. Before recommending tooth extraction, however, your dentist will perform a comprehensive examination to ensure that the tooth can’t be saved. We will also consult with you about your options for preserving your smile after the tooth is removed.

Improving Your Oral Health

Tooth extraction can be necessary for a number of reasons. For instance, impacted wisdom teeth are removed because they push against your other teeth, causing damage to them and the surrounding jawbone structure. Another reason might be that a severely infected tooth can’t be restored and the infected structure poses a threat to nearby oral tissues. You see, a severely damaged tooth can affect your bite’s balance as well as damage your oral tissues, and removing it can make way for your dentist to restore your smile.

With tooth extraction, your dentist can remove the compromised tooth and the threat it poses to the rest of your oral health. Depending on the specific tooth and its location, however, its loss may impact your long-term oral health and bite function. With the exception of wisdom teeth, your dentist may discuss your options for replacing your tooth as soon as it’s extracted, such as with a dental implant and lifelike dental crown restoration.
