Quality Care for Oral Recovery
Dental surgery can encompass a number of different procedures, including tooth extraction, root canal treatment, and deep periodontal cleanings. Not only is it important to seek timely dental treatment, but patients could benefit from surgery-specific post-operative care as well. As your oral structures heal, post-operative aftercare can help you avoid complications, promote proper healing, and ensure a successful recovery. This can also help minimize pain, swelling, and infection.
Surgical Post-Operative Instructions
The first 24 hours following your procedure are some of the most important. During this time, it is highly recommended that patients do not spit, rinse, or use a straw, as this can dislodge blood clots, ultimately hindering the healing process. You should also bite on gauze, eat soft, easily swallowed food, and apply ice packs per your dentist’s instructions. Of course, every procedure and every patient is different, and you should speak with your dentist for a more individualized care plan and instructions.
Following the first 24 hours, you can gently rinse using warm salt water made by mixing half a teaspoon of salt with 8 oz of warm water. You should also brush your teeth gently, taking care to avoid brushing the surgical area for a few days, and avoid using alcohol-containing mouthwashes. Finally, communicate with your dentist and attend regular follow up appointments to continue to monitor your oral health and recovery.
