Orthodontic Maintenance and Follow Up
Though your gums and periodontal tissues may be tender following an orthodontic extraction or other major procedure, it is important to keep your gums clean and maintain excellent oral hygiene following your treatment. Our office offers follow up appointments as a part of our holistic approach to your dental care. Through these appointments and a combination of gentle flossing, brushing, and rinsing with warm saltwater, you can minimize complications and ensure optimal healing for a healthy, aligned smile.
Post-Operative Instructions
Following your orthodontic procedure, you may experience some discomfort or soreness. To soothe irritated gums, your orthodontist may recommend rinsing with warm salt water, or the use of over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. It is also important to be mindful of your oral hygiene, taking care to brush your teeth gently but effectively using a soft-bristled brush. Interproximal brushes can be a tool for cleaning hard-to-reach areas.
In most cases, it is recommended to maintain a soft diet for the first 48-hours after your procedure. This means avoiding hard and sticky foods, as well as items that break down into pieces, such as popcorn or raw vegetables. Soft foods such as soups, applesauce, or yogurt are helpful in allowing your mouth to adjust to the new appliance.
