Should You Whiten Teeth In-Office Or At-Home?

bellaire teeth whiteningDo you have dental discoloration that makes you feel self-conscious? If so, then you may want to try teeth whitening! We have an in-office and an at-home procedure to brighten teeth by as much as eight shades. In today’s blog, your Bellaire, TX, dentist talks about our teeth whitening treatment options.

The Causes of Your Stained Teeth

Why do our teeth become stained? This is due to a number of different factors. For example, lack of proper brushing and flossing and a diet high in sugar and starch can lead to serious plaque buildup which endanger oral health and makes discoloration more visible. Drinks with dark pigments, like tea, red wine, soda, and coffee, could stain teeth too. Smoking cigarettes and using other tobacco products can be a factor too. However, we can offer a significantly brighter smile!

Cosmetic Teeth Whitening

We have two different options available. With our in-office treatment, we can apply a powerful bleaching gel to the teeth and then activate it with a special light. This can brighten teeth by several shades in as little as one hour, so you can obtain results fast!

For mor severe discoloration, and to limit tooth sensitivity, we could offer an at-home treatment. First, you stop by the office long enough for us to create a custom set of plastic trays. You then return home with these trays, along with a powerful bleaching gel. Each day, you will fill the trays with the gel and then wear them for about 30 minutes a day, over the course of one to two weeks. The trays ensure your results will be even, and prevent the saliva from diluting the results too. You can also keep the trays and any leftover gel for touches in the coming months. This could mean shades up to eight shades brighter!

Keeping Your Teeth Bright

To keep your teeth shining, take time to brush your teeth twice a day and to floss every evening. These actions remove food particles to limit plaque buildup until your next checkup and cleaning visit, during which we remove all plaque and tartar and then polish the teeth. You can also help by avoiding beverages with dark pigments, foods high in sugar and starch, and tobacco products. You not only keep your teeth bright, but lower the risk of cavities and gum disease.
