Bridges & Crowns

After-Care Instructions for Bridges and Crowns

You have had your tooth or teeth prepared for a crown and a temporary crown has been placed over the prepared tooth. You may have some discomfort or sensitivity from the procedure. This is normal and can be relieved with an anti-inflammatory medication such as Advil or Tylenol.

Please avoid chewing anything sticky such as gum, taffy, caramel, etc. and avoid chewing ice. These items can cause your temporary crown to come off. Also be careful when flossing. Do not snap the floss up, but gently pull the floss out through the side of the teeth to avoid displacing your temporary crown.

If your temporary crown does come off, do not worry. Simply clean the crown under running water, place some Vaseline in the crown with a Q-tip, and put it back in place. Call our office during regular hours to have the temporary crown recemented. If your temporary breaks and cannot be replaced, then call our office during regular business hours and we will make a new temporary.

If you have a problem after business hours, either replace the crown as described above or leave it off. If the tooth is sensitive, avoid chewing in the area until you can be seen in our office. It is important not to leave the temporary off for an extended period of time because the prepared teeth can shift and this may cause your permanent crown not to fit.

With care, your temporary crown should serve you until the permanent crown is placed.
